Ranges from the Northeast North Island to the Auckland Islands (Ref. 45524). Most abundant around the South Island in 100-300 m (Ref. 9258). Recorded as scarce in the Northeastern and Eastern Chatham Rise (Ref. 87166). Canterbury Bight and off Westland are the main fishing grounds (Ref. 9258). Landed throughout the year with main season from February to June (Ref. 9258). Recorded in trawl surveys in Chatham Islands (Ref. 45493) off the east coast of South Island (Ref. 58461). Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ. Also Ref. 1371, 9072, 75154.
